5:30pm INHERENT ViCE (2014)
Paul Thomas Anderson’s adaptation of Thomas Pynchon’s mind melting, psychedelic neo-noir, perfectly practices what the counter-culture of 1970 was preaching. Multiple viewings are needed to digest this hauntingly hilarious, modern mystery. Showcasing yet another career defining performance by Joaquin Phoenix (steadily stoned private investigator) “Doc” and Josh Brolin (multiple civil rights violating) Lt. “Bigfoot”, as they both attempt to track down the phantasmagorical femme fatale Shasta Fey (played by an absolutely hypnotic Katherine Waterston.) While you keep your eyes peeled for memorable drug induced roles by Owen Wilson, Benicio del Toro, Hong Chau and the heavenly Joanna Newsom, don’t miss a beautiful 35mm print courtesy of Warner Brothers. While many critics are listing PTA’s The Master and Phantom Thread as their “best of the decade”, Inherent Vice may be the best of them all.
8:30pm THE BiG LEBOWSKi (1998)
Joel and Ethan Coen loosely based this pricelessly profound pilgrimage on Raymond Chandler’s pioneering film noir writing (The Big Sleep, The Long Goodbye). While Jeff Bridges as The Dude has become a cultural icon, the Coen Brothers brilliantly hypnagogic achievement also pays non-stop tributes to cinematic history ranging from Busby Berkeley pre-code’s musical numbers, 1970s experimental filmmaker Carolee Schneemann and politically charged filmmaker John Milius (especially his 1978 surfing classic Big Wednesday. Sporting an all-star cast including John Goodman, Julianne Moore, Steve Buscemi and John Turturro (who is releasing his written/directed/starring spin-off sequel The Jesus Rolls in early 2020), this quintessential cult classic was made to be seen in a packed house.
